Background: 

Dr. Arthur Siu, a licensed optometrist, started Family Optometric Vision Care more than 30 years in Oakland and Antioch, CA. The Antioch practice has a new location with ample parking and office space to better serve the East Contra Costa community.

The Oakland practice has been in the same Lake Merritt location since 1974. It is on the second floor of a converted older house facing the lake. Its charm provides a warm home like atmosphere. 

Our Doctors 

Dr. Arthur Siu

Dr. Siu was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended Oakland public schools.  He received his Bachelors of Science in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley and later attended the UC Berkeley School of Optometry where he graduated with his professional degree in 1974.  Dr. Siu is married with two grown children.  He currently teaches Tai-Chi seven days a week at the YMCA in downtown Oakland. He recently was the recepient of the Volunteer of the Year fo the Oakland Downtown YMCA,  He often helps with the environment  Corpus Christi Church in Piedmont. Ask him about foods and you may not leave our office!

Dr. Joycelyn Niimi

Dr. Niimi grew up in Hawaii, obtained her Bachelors degree at University of Washington in Seattle, and completed her Doctorate degree at University of California, Berkeley.  She joined this practice after graduating in 2007.  Dr. Niimi received training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida and  worked at the Palo Alto VA Low Vision Clinic, gaining experience managing patients with severe eye conditions such as Diabetes and macular degeneration. Outside the office, you'll find her in the gym or running alongside cars or trying to keep up with the P90X. Of course the DVD wins each time.

Dr. Kuniyoshi Kanai

Dr. Kanai came to the U.S. after completing his physics' degree from Waseda University in Japan.  He graduated from UC Berkeley School of Optometry, received training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida and completed the residency program at UC Berkeley.  He's currently a clinical instructor providing experience and knowledge to optometry students on the Berkeley campus. Dr. Kanai practices optometry in our office on Tuesdays and Fridays.  He comes from a family dedicated to optometry; his brother and father practice in Japan.  As a family, they provide well needed eye care to under developed nations where such benefits are limited.  Dr. Kanai enjoys all types of sporting events, fast cars, and especially his wife's cooking! He is now a proud father of baby girl.

Family Optometric Vision Care would like to congratulate Dr. Kuni Kanai and Wife Yuri Kanai on their new bundle of joy Baby Alisa!! The Staff here can't wait to meet her!! Congrats again Dr. Kanai and Yuri!!
